Buxus sempervirens 'Suffruticosa' (Dwarf Box) Hedging Plants

Dwarf box (buxus sempervirens 'Suffruticosa') is the dwarf form of common box (buxus sempervirens). The difference between dwarf and common box is that dwarf box has a generally more dense appearance and grows more slowly than common box. Dwarf box leaves are more closely spaced on the twig than, and are about the same size as common box leaves.

  • Dwarf box is generally used for relatively low evergreen hedges, and especially for box parterres and knot gardens. Hedging around 25-50cm tall could be planted in either dwarf or common box, depending on the required growth rate. Ultimately the choice between dwarf and common box hedging plants is a matter of personal preference, rather than precise rules. Buxus s. 'Suffruticosa' can also be used for fine evergreen topiary, especially balls, as the dwarf box plants have a dense naturally rounded growth habit.

    Dwarf box hedging plants are usually planted at 5 to 8 plants to the metre (20 to 12cm spacing). 6 plants per metre is probably the commonest spacing. The dwarf box hedge will look the same in the end, whatever the spacing in this range. The closer spacings may be chosen if relatively small hedging plants are required to form a complete hedge relatively quickly.

    Buxus sempervirens 'Suffruticosa' can be planted at any time when the ground is workable. Container grown plants are generally used where the plants may be kept for some time before planting, and in summer.
