Special offer on top quality 20-25cm diameter Ilex crenata 'Dark Green' balls

There are a number of low maintenance evergreen shrubs that can be used as alternatives to box (Buxus).

Ilex crenata (Japanese holly) is a low growing hardy evergreen shrub which is often used as an alternative to common box (Buxus sempervens) for evergreen hedge plants or topiary. Japanese holly has small evergreen leaves and indistinct white flowers, followed by black berries. The rate of growth is about 10-20cm per year. Ilex crenata will grow to about 5 metres tall in time, but can be easily kept trimmed to topiary shapes, or a low or medium height hedge.

Ilex crenata 'Convexa' has dark green, slightly convex, evergreen leaves. When trimmed to a hedge or topiary shape, it looks very like Buxus sempervirens.

Ilex crenata 'Stokes' is similar to Ilex crenata 'Convexa', with slightly paler and flatter leaves and a slightly more compact growth habit.

Ilex crenata 'Dark Green' and 'Green Hedge' have small dark green leaves, and are fairly similar to Convexa and Stokes.

Ilex crenata 'Golden Gem' has good golden foliage, especially when grown in a sunny situation.

Ilex crenata 'Blondie' has slightly larger, pale green leaves.

Small (15-20cm) Ilex crenata hedging plants are usually planted at about 4 plants per metre. Ilex crenata shrubs around 30cm tall may be planted at about 3 plants per metre, while 60cm Ilex crenata bushes are usually spaced at about 2 plants to the metre. The exact spacing will depend on plant size and how complete a hedge is desired initially.

Ilex crenata can be planted at any time when the ground is workable. The Ilex crenata trees are available as container grown plants, so they are available for planting all the year round.

Ilex crenata grows about 10-20cm a year. Ilex crenata hedging and topiary can be clipped once a year, in summer, and can then be neatened up in the autumn, if required.

Euonymus japonicus 'Microphyllus' is a slow-growing box substitute with a compact and upright growth habit, which makes it particularly suitable for low and narrow hedges. Euonymus japonicaus 'Microphyllus Aureovariegatus' is a cream/gold variegated form, and Euonymus japonicus 'Microphyllus Argenteovariegatus' has green and white variegateed leaves.

Lonicera nitida is often mistaken for box. It has smaller leaves than most box and grows faster than Buxus.

Lonicera nitida responds well to clipping, and can be used to make very fine topiary, and hedging.
